Hi,
I have some time on my hands now and would like to fix variadic
templates. Can somebody in the know sum up what the issue with the
current implementation is, and what solution paths they could envision?

The current implementation isn't much of a starting point; it never got far enough to be useful, and has fallen into disrepair since then. It's probably easier to start over than it is to work from the code we have.
