Seeing as it's Easter, does anybody know why GCC has a [GNU breaking
out of an egg as a
logo](http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GNU_Compiler_Collection_logo.svg)?

Because of the old fork egcs which because the current day gcc I think.

Correct. egcs was pronounced "eggs".
