Update from github:
I’ve heard back from our engineering team who has started looking into this. It would appear that manual merges are occasionally exceeding a 10-second web request timeout while waiting on back-end operations. When that happens, the worker is terminated before it can return a response or mark the merge process complete, leaving it active. This could be contributing to the issues you’re seeing. Auto-merge works around the issue because the actual merge runs in a background job rather than within the web request timeout. Our engineers suggest using auto-merge as a workaround in the meantime. Please give this a try and let me know if this helps.
The option to enable auto-merge goes away once all the tests have passed, so the full process for working around this issue is:
- Wait until CI passes, PR has been reviewed and is ready to land.
- Update the branch with either a merge or a rebase (this brings back the option to enable auto-merge). This can be done on the Web UI or with a push to the PR branch.
- Enable auto-merge.
